The Blue Lagoon in Iceland

The first use of geothermal energy for heating did not come until 1907 when a farmer ran a concrete pipe from a hot spring that led steam into his house. The Blue Lagoon is part of the 81 per cent of total primary energy supply in Iceland is derived from domestically produced renewable energy sources. The water in the Blue Lagoon is first used to create electricity, then to make hot water for homes and ends up in the Blue Lagoon.

Blue Lagoon, which communicates world of healing power, wellness and beauty, is founded on a unique source of geothermal seawater that originates in Iceland’s extreme environment. The Blue Lagoon (Icelandic: “Bláa lónið”) geothermal spa is the most visited and photographed attractions in Iceland. The temperature of the water in the bathing and swimming area is 40 °C (104 °F). Today, the Blue Lagoon sports a 15-room clinic and a spa that attracts 407,000 tourists annually compared with the 300 thousand Icelanders living in the country it is hugs. Scientifically, the seawater stem from 2 km below the sea level where it gets toasted by the temperature of 240°C when the pressure is 36 times more the pressure on the land. This geothermal seawater also meets the cooling magmatic intrusions and detains the underground minerals. The hot steam then flows to the ground where it is used to generate electricity and with heat exchangers make hot water to a public hot water heating system. The hot water is there for used to create electricity, hot water and then finaly in the Blue Laggon, thus 81 per cent of total primary energy supply in Iceland is derived from domestically produced renewable energy sources.The Blue Lagoon itself holds six million liters of seawater that is renewed every 40 hours.
